Help Me Name My Snake!

We added to our zoo last Monday!

I’ve been wanting a snake for quite some time, but I’d never gotten around to getting one. Honestly, what stopped me the most was the idea of feeding mice (ew.) But my husband got a corn snake last fall, so I’m getting a little more used to the idea. I mean, I already feed big ugly bugs to my bearded dragon, so why not?

This guy showed up on a sale group on Facebook. We talked about it as a semi-joke for about a week until I finally decided I wanted him.

He’s a banana California king snake, and my immediate nickname for him was Bob Dole. (Cause, you know, Dole…bananas…). But I’d like a permanent name for him, so I’m asking for your help! Mr. Dole is about 2.5 – 3 feet long and just over a year old.

Not a good pic since I hadn’t put a light on top of his tank yet, but here he is showing off his length and his beautiful markings.

I’d love to have something literary, Star Trek related, artsy, or vintage-y. I’m considering Lore and Mr. Rogers. Flood me with your suggestions!

  1. I like Q over Lore. Lore was pretty evil. Q was mean, at times, but he could be hilrious & he made Data get to laugh.

    Or

    Kaa from The Jungle Book.

On a different note. I am reading The Wanderer’s Guide to Dragon Keeping by Ashley O’Melia. It is a really great book if you like fantasy, some mystery, & so far a charming romance (I’m not quite finished). I’m not a romance reader & this hasn’t been like that. If you haven’t read it. Give it a try. I think it’s great!

    • Q is a good suggestion! I often found the Q episodes to be frustrating, though. Data is one of my favorite characters, but since I already used his name on a different animal my husband suggested Lore. He was awful, but it’s a neat name that also pertains to stories. This snake should be around for a long time, so it’s hard to decide.
Also, I’m very glad you’re enjoying my book! Please be sure to leave it a review!

      • Yes, Data would have been good, but I wouldn’t use it then either. I like Dukat or Elim Garak. But that’s only if you’ll venture from ST: TNG.

      • I loved DS9! I didn’t think I would like it as much as TNG, but I adored it! Odo was my favorite (already used that name too lol). Garak was a great character as well. I’m on season 4 of Voyager right now.

      • I adore Voyager. My husband & I watch all the Star Treks in order couple times a year. Plus Heroes & Icons Tv has them all in order one after the other starting at 8. We even liked Enterprise once we watched it. Except for that awful theme song! Okay sorry. I could talk trek a day. Lol

      • As far as Voyager names, I considered Chakotay. He’s definitely one of my favorites!
I haven’t gotten to Enterprise yet, but I’ll be watching it, too! I don’t ever mind Trek talk!

      • I love Chakotay, too! There are so many good characters on Enterprise, too. I think that opening music was very un-Trek-like. They should haved pulled that after the first episode.

Do you watch ST : Discovery? I stopped watching after the first episode. Is it worth the price?

      • I was very disappointed with Discovery because it didn’t seem very Trekky to me. I watched the whole first season because my husband had CBS All Access anyway. If you think of it as just a scifi show, it’s not bad. There were more tie-ins with the ST canon toward the end of the season, so I’m interested to see what they do with season 2.

      • Hmmm. I was hoping it was more Trekky. I’ll talk to my husband & see. He doesn’t like paying to see Star Trek. Free! Lol Thanks for the info!

    • I thought you should know that we’ve been trying out the name Q for the snake, and it seems to really be working so far! I really appreciate the suggestion!

  2. Number 1…. Picard always called Riker, “Number 1.” I know it’s a nickname but I feel that’s what makes it unique.

  3. It looks awesome, I have no clue about a name that would fit your interests, only thing that comes to me is Peter J Lewis due to his Mr bannana story and shedding skin but that’s because I’m into a lot of audio horror.

  4. Can’t help with a name for the snake, but what a gorgeous snake it is. If only my wife would let me have one!! My daughter would love it.

    • Sorry for the slow reply; I’ve been on vacation. And thank you! I think he’s a rather gorgeous snake, too! We have quite a few pets, and I have to say the snakes are the easiest to take care of by a long shot.

      • That’s alright I too am currently on vacation. Did you enjoy it? I have been told they are easy and don’t eat as often which is more convenient lol. I’ll have to read more and find out what other pets you have 😁

      • My vacation was great! I went to Disney World for the first time. 🙂 Snakes really are awesome. We’ve got dogs, cats, fish, guinea pigs, and a bearded dragon, and the snakes take the least amount of maintenance by far. Not quite as cuddly as a dog or a cat, but still adorable!

      • One day I plan to see disneyland/world. Nice you must have a decent yard and house for all of them. 😁 glad you had a great vacation

  5. I remember Thor explaining that Loki once turned himself into a snake exactly like that one. Because Thor loved snakes, he picked it up, and then Loki changed back and stabbed him. These are God’s of mischief and thunder, and I’ve heard all of these names and more, as pet snake enthusiasts eventually find a name. Please don’t let it be Oscar.
Even though Loki was my first consideration, being’s he’s always a snake.
The Lo morphed into Low Life, because it looked as if it was positioned on the floor. When he’s in one of his upper level abodes, he (is it a he?) would be high life. And if it’s a she, scrap both of those ideas.

    • Sorry for the slow reply; I’ve been on vacation. I can’t use Loki, since we already have a gold dojo loach by that name. 🙂 He’s kind of snake-like, so I guess it was still a good choice!

      • Yes it was…a good choice.
If I had a snake, and I probably will never have one, I would name it ‘back slider’.
I had a friend that named his ‘slither’ and I had bad dreams about that guy slithering up to me one day and treating me like a baby hampster. Enjoy your summer.

      • No fun at all! We have two snakes, but nothing that will get big enough to eat a member of the family lol.

      • Thanks for the reply, I hadn’t laughed at all today until now. Very cool. My evening is set…instead of snakes (pets) I have guitars, and one of them is calling my name.
I’m accepting that you had an enjoyable get-a-way, with your sense of humor. And may all your days be more than you expected. Peace.
        Phil

    Barclay!

  7. A book character or humor often work well.

Thank you for choosing to follow one of my blogs. 🙂

  8. My daughter named her pet ball python Cheetos when she was 8-years-old. I’m pretty sure you can come up with something better! How about Drogon, the name of Daenerys Targaryen’s black dragon from Game of Thrones? Or Falkor from The Neverending Story? Smaug from The Hobbit?

    • That’s adorable! Kids are so fun. We had a cat named Cutie Cupcake because my daughter (who was 3 at the time) wanted to name her.
I’m the weird person who hasn’t gotten into Game of Thrones! I read a few of the books but never got into the show. Falkor is a cute name, though!

  9. Yeah, Q for Quetzalcoatl. or summat like that… glad you’ve got the pet of your desires! Will look into your book(s) soon… Cheers & ALLONS – Y!

  10. Beautiful snake. Looks like a Goddess to me. Maybe Athena.
