Book Review: Lover Eternal by J.R. Ward

Even if you’re not into vampire romance, you might be surprised by Lover Eternal by J.R. Ward.

From the Cover: Within the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Rhage is the warrior vampire with the strongest appetites. He’s the deadliest fighter, the most voracious lover, the quickest to act on his impulses. He’s also been cursed with two hundred years of hell. Possessed by a beast, he lives in fear of the times when his inner dragon comes out and he’s a danger to everyone around him.

Mary Luce has unwittingly found herself in the vampire world, and under Rhage’s protection. With her own life-threatening curse to bear, she’s not looking for love. Besides, she’s stopped believing in saving grace and miracles long ago. But when Rhage’s intense sexual attraction turns into emotional bonding, he knows he must have her for his mate. As their enemies close in, Mary finds herself praying for something she fears she’ll never have: life eternal with the one she loves.

What I Loved: I don’t think of myself as a fan of vampire romance, but it’s one of those genres that can really sneak up on you. I can’t stand the sight of blood, and sometimes I can’t even stand the thought of it, but I was still thoroughly sucked in by Lover Eternal. (See what I did there? Sucked in? Anyway…)

The Black Dagger Brotherhood series is interesting not because it’s about vampires but because there are great characters and intriguing plots. Even though the ending to Mary and Rhage’s story was fairly predictable, the path they took to get there as they each dealt with their inner demons was relatable and gripping.

A great series will introduce more characters along the way and make you want to know more about them, and Lover Eternal does just that. I don’t want to give too much away, but let’s just say I’m eager to read more.

What I Didn’t Love: This is the second book in the series, and there’s one thing that has driven me crazy in both of them so far. The men of the brotherhood often wear boots, and they’re invariably referred to as shitkickers. It’s just one of those words that really stands out when it’s been used 30 times in a single novel. I get that there’s a specific type of footwear that’s being referenced here, but it just feels like the author is trying too hard to make the vampires come across as badasses. It’s just a little thing, but it bugs me.

There were a few typos, but otherwise the only thing I didn’t like about this book was that I was going to jump right into reading the third one and I realized I didn’t have one.

Rating and Review: I give this book 4 stars because it was great but not earth-shattering or life-changing. If you like vampire romance, or even if you don’t, you should check it out. (And just so you don’t have to hunt it down, Dark Lover is the first in the series.)

Have you read Lover Eternal or another book by J.R. Ward? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!

#1 – Ten of Earth: The suit of Earth is all about the material manifestations of our emotions and efforts, and the ten represents the culmination of these things. This card, therefore, indicates that all your hard work is truly paying off. You’re getting the things you’ve been working for and achieving your goals.

#2 – The Magician: The Magician reminds us that we have the power to achieve our goals. You’re in control of your destiny, and you have the ability to make miracles happen. Make choices that honor who you are. The required elements are balanced in your favor as you begin the next step of your journey.

#3 – The Hierophant: It’s time to seek guidance concerning the issues at hand. Devote yourself to your spiritual practice. Seek counseling with a love issue, be mindful of those in authority when it comes to your career, or look for balance and direction with your finances. The Hierophant may also signify a formal declaration of love (such as a wedding or a blessing for one) or another traditional ceremony.

Which card did you pick? Did it mean anything for you? I’d love to know, so feel free to leave me a comment!

Guest Post: Poetry by Christo N

Breathe Deep, Seek Peace:

The tree of wisdom beckons

To all who would heed its call

The ancient power of nature

Breathing life into

Our weary souls

Let this fresh knowledge

These new synapses firing

Be a rapturous discovery

Of the healing power

Contained within

The oceans, rivers and forests

As the waves wash away

The pain and longing

And the wind in the trees

Whispers sweet nothings

To nurture peace within

Our tired thoughts

With time

We could spiral upwards

With content and meaningful

Thoughts, words, actions

Gliding

Surfing

Floating

On the beauty

Found only on planet earth

This blessed world

With all its angels and devils

Has all we need to find

Heaven within ourselves

You just need to know

Where to look

Start with the tree of wisdom

Drink deeply from the springs of knowledge

And never, ever, ever give up

#1 – Canary Spirit: It’s time to sing your song and let the world know who you are! Maybe you’ve been holding back because you’re afraid people won’t like the genuine you, or maybe you’ve been trying too hard to blend in with the crowd in order to belong, but you won’t find your real inner truth and happiness until you can be your authentic self.

#2 – Panther Spirit: You’re braver and more powerful than you think, and now is the time to embrace it! Don’t let fear hold you back. Don’t wait around thinking that eventually the risks will eventually go away. Be bold, be brave, take a risk, and step forward!

#3 – Wolf Spirit: You’ve learned a lot along the way, and it’s time to turn that knowledge into wisdom. Turn it in towards yourself and make it a part of your life as you become the destiny you’ve been waiting for.

Which card did you pick? Did it mean anything for you? I’d love to know, so feel free to leave me a comment!

Tarot Tuesday! Pick Your Card from The Akashic Tarot

Needing a little guidance for the week? Then you’re in luck, because it’s Tarot Tuesday!

This week’s pull is from The Akashic Tarot by Sharon Anne Klingler and Sandra Anne Taylor. If you’re unfamiliar with them, the Akashic Records are fields of energy that contain all knowledge past and present. It’s a complex but fascinating idea. I recommend The Akashic Records Made Easy by Sandra Anne Taylor to explore it further.

#1 – 1 of Roses: This card is about commitment, contracts, and signing. It could represent something as bold and obvious as a romantic vow or a love from your past coming back into your life. Whether you’re looking at a romantic commitment or a business contract (such as the purchase/sale of a home, a new job, etc.), be confident in knowing that it will turn out well.

#2 – 8 of Forces: Just as lightning suddenly splits apart a tree, you’re experiencing a loss that feels sudden and drastic. The storm has been brewing for quite some time, though, and this was always going to happen. Accept this incredible force of nature and give the rain time to wash away the parts of your life you no longer need. New beginnings are always coming after loss.

#3 – 2 of Keys: The suit of Keys relates to values, wealth, success, and power. The artistry on this card is incredibly important. The man is focusing on the treasure chest in front of him that’s been broken open and everything valuable stolen, and that’s keeping him from paying attention to the one chest behind him that’s still safe. The 2 of Keys tells us not to concentrate on the losses we’ve suffered or what we don’t have but to focus on what you still have remaining. There are other opportunities out there for you.

Which card did you pick? Did it mean anything for you? I’d love to know, so feel free to leave me a comment!

Guest Post: Poetry by Miriam Sagan

An Odd—Large—Painting

in the rental casita
a plump woman
asleep, on a lumpy sofa
bare feet
on a red pillow
despite the green
ferny wallpaper
this is no
Matisse
her unconvincing
knees
seem faraway
from her head
while her toes
are off the canvas completely

there are days
I’ve felt like this
no Sleeping Beauty
just trying to get through
a hot afternoon
a third trimester
high school
menopause
too enervated
to even put ice cubes
in a glass
of tap water

but this is bought and sold, signed
hanging on the wall
the artists’s name
a blur beneath a painted cushion

and the day seems like a to do list
I left for myself
twenty years ago
forgetting to even mention
I love you.

***

Ancestors

zodiac swam in its round
above the wooden ark
veiled women hid behind
a mechitza of water and blood
if I was a child
I ran among their legs
if I was a child I ran

in the Red Cafe in Kiev
at the teetering round table
in steam and smoke like a railway station
tea served in endless glasses
they are shouting again
those philosophers
too broke to pay
but suddenly I can’t hear them
sound fades, they’re ghosts
and what am I?

in all of history, who can care
about one girl, tired, besmirched
sitting by the coals of a dying fire
who can care
about birch trees—
there are so many…

who can care about rape
about how my eyes turn
a betraying green
or how my fingers curl helplessly
as DNA deforms my hand
the double helix of Vikings, Cossacks, the Rus
come down out of the cold shamanic north
for bad, for worse

ancestors come if I call
smelling like a snuffed candle
and come if I don’t call
smelling of hospital corridors and panic
for the angels are too busy
encouraging each blade of grass to grow
reciting the alphabet
but only from aleph to aleph
they have not yet
reached the first letter
of my name

before this, a wall
before that, destruction
before that, an ark on the deep
a raven a dove, an opinion
about what survives

***

Rancho de Taos

you think you
have problems…
windchimes
kept us awake
all night
along with the neighbor’s
barking dog
and the dance music
turned up loud
not to mention
the moon…

magpie feathers float on the air
something
killed and ate
a bird;
a cauldron, a metal rabbit, a lantern
guard the storeroom
of a different feeling

Taos Mountain is still
snow-covered,
the day after Easter
I’d be careful,
breeze ruffles the pages of a book
about grenades and the Chinese revolution

the tiny girl
like a crow
can count
at least up to five
for how mysterious
the hacienda is
that always
has one more bed
than the number
of residents.

#1 – Unity: This card is about spiritual growth. You may need a divine teacher to help you along this path, or you may be called to serve as one for someone else. Solitude and introspection may be needed in order to deal with challenges.

#2 – Seven of Summer: It’s time to make a decision, and you can’t procrastinate any longer. You’re overthinking the situation and making excuses, but it’s time to listen to your heart and move forward.

Signed Book: True Jaguar by Warren Norwood

Even though I’m still working through my Bookshelf Cleanout, there are some books that simply won’t be leaving my shelves anytime soon. Some of my favorites are those that’ve been signed by the author, of course! While I don’t have any amazing stories about meeting a famous writer, these books still mean a lot to me.

You may have seen my recent post about building my Warren Norwood collection with The Windhover Tapes. I’m currently obsessed with old sci-fi, and bonus points if it’s out of print! I scored this signed book on eBay for only six bucks.

I particularly love the way it was signed. I don’t know if this was for some sort of giveaway or if perhaps the author had a feeling this book would wander around until it got to me, but I love it!

Do you have any signed books? I have more I’ll be sharing in the coming months, but I’d love to hear about yours!
