#1 – Canary Spirit: It’s time to sing your song and let the world know who you are! Maybe you’ve been holding back because you’re afraid people won’t like the genuine you, or maybe you’ve been trying too hard to blend in with the crowd in order to belong, but you won’t find your real inner truth and happiness until you can be your authentic self.

#2 – Panther Spirit: You’re braver and more powerful than you think, and now is the time to embrace it! Don’t let fear hold you back. Don’t wait around thinking that eventually the risks will eventually go away. Be bold, be brave, take a risk, and step forward!

#3 – Wolf Spirit: You’ve learned a lot along the way, and it’s time to turn that knowledge into wisdom. Turn it in towards yourself and make it a part of your life as you become the destiny you’ve been waiting for.

Which card did you pick? Did it mean anything for you? I’d love to know, so feel free to leave me a comment!

Tarot Tuesday! Pick Your Card from The Sacred Traveler Oracle

It’s time once again for Tarot Tuesday to see what the rest of the week holds for us!

This week’s pull is from The Sacred Traveler Oracle by Denise Linn. The bold, otherworldly images on these cards really called out to me, and there’s just so much energy in these cards.

#1 – Ascending the Mountain: Press on! Even if things are tough, even if it seems as though the mountain is just impossibly high, you have to keep going. You know that what’s at the top of that mountain is totally worth all that hard work in the end, but it’s easy to forget when you’re struggling up the slope. Is that mountain your own barrier that you’ve set up to stop your own success? Then this is the time to trudge right up and over it.

#2 – Breaking Trail: Something new and exciting is coming, and sometimes you have to find your own way to it. If someone hasn’t already blazed that trail for you, then it’s up to you. You’re working through all the emotional blockages that have stopped you before and pushing away anything that stands in your path to success.

#3 – View from Above: Just as this card says, it’s time to look at the big picture. It’s too easy to get caught up in all the little things in life that might stop you, so now is the time to take a step back and see what’s truly important. That’s the information you need to make major life decisions. This card also invites you to get a different perspective on your troubles, whether it’s seeing someone else’s viewpoint or simply looking at things from a different angle.

Which card did you pick? Did it mean anything for you? I’d love to know, so feel free to leave me a comment!

#1 – Grasshopper Spirit: What have you been waiting for? Why not? It’s time to jump up and forward into something new! It isn’t always easy to let go of the ground beneath your feet, but right now you need to trust that spirit will guide you and make sure you land properly. If you’ve been waiting and wondering if the time is right, the answer is yes!

#2 – Horse Spirit: Movement, freedom, travel, and adventure are what the Horse Spirit is all about. This could refer to an actual trip or a spiritual journey, but you are the one who holds the reins and makes the decisions. That being said, don’t get too caught up in control. This card is about freedom, after all! Get down off your high horse and enjoy that freedom.

#3 – Electric Eel Spirit: Like a jolt of electricity, this card is here to say epiphanies are coming. Right now is the time of great ideas, inspiration, and creativity. Did you have a great ‘Aha!’ moment, but you dismissed it because you thought it was just a pipe dream? The electric eel asks you to see where it could lead and transform that idea into something you can use.

Which card did you pick? Did it mean anything for you? I’d love to know, so feel free to leave me a comment!

#1 – Bobcat Spirit: The world is full of mysteries, and sometimes there is no amount of logic, intellect, or investigation that will reveal the truth to us. The Bobcat is reminding you to trust that you will understand everything you need to know, and to use your heart and your intuition. This card could also be letting you know that this isn’t the time to divulge your own secrets. Not everyone around you has the best intentions, and you should always protect yourself.

#2 – Brown Bear Spirit: Much as a bear hibernates during the winter to ensure he’s ready for the warmer months, the Brown Bear Spirit is reminding you that it’s time to take a break. Overworking yourself or getting frazzled in your quest for answers isn’t doing you any favors. It’s time for rest, meditation, or maybe even a nap! Everything will come to you in time, but right now you need to be patient and let it happen. (I personally feel very called out by my choice of this card, since I tend to overwork myself all the time!)

#3 – White Raven Spirit: Have you been looking for a sign? The White Raven is it! Ancient people treated birds and their movements as oracles, and now one has come to you. This card is your reminder, your sign.

Which card did you pick? Did it mean anything for you? I’d love to know, so feel free to leave me a comment!

#1 – Impasse: Is something stopping you on the path you believe you should be on? It may seem like a failure to turn back or change course, but that isn’t always the case. There are times when the wisest thing to do is to find a new route instead of railing yourself against a stone wall that isn’t ever going to move.

#2 – Great Adventure: It’s time for adventure! This could mean a literal adventure, like a trip or a business endeavor, or it could be telling you that right now is the time to take risks and expand your horizons. Either way, you’re not meant to stay where you’re at!

#3 – Gates of Triumph: Victory and success are yours! Even if you’ve stumbled a bit on the way there, you’re on the right path. Keep going, and know that everything will work out as it should.

#1 – Bat Spirit: This card is about release and rebirth. It shows us that many things come to an end, even things that we feel are good, but that doesn’t mean that all is lost or that our lives are over. Something new is coming, or perhaps something in your life is simply taking on a new shape. It’s okay to let go of the past and of the things that are leaving your life. Trust that it will only get better!

#2 – Bee Spirit: Bees know how to work together to make honey, and this card reminds you to connect with your inner spirit and the greater consciousness of the universe to gather your own sweet rewards! Are you doing everything on your own? Or feeling disconnected? It’s time to join back in! This could be a spiritual journey or one with other people, but you don’t have to miss out on all the good stuff in life. (On a personal note, I love the steampunk elements on this little guy!)

#3 – Beaver Spirit: The beaver is here to remind you that dreams aren’t built on wishful thinking. You have to do the work! If there’s something you want, you have to create the solid foundation to make it happen. While some of our lives is left up to fate, there’s often something we can do to help make it go the right direction. Is there something you can do toward starting that new business you’ve been dreaming of? Do you hate your job, but you haven’t bothered to look for a new one? Or is your goal lingering in the back of your mind without getting any attention? This card says it’s time to do the hard work and make it happen!

Which card did you pick? Did it mean anything for you? I’d love to know, so feel free to leave me a comment!

Tarot Tuesday! Pick Your Card!

It’s been so hard to get around to these posts lately! I hurt my back a few weeks ago, and that left me barely getting through the day for about a week. Things are on the mend now, and it’s time to get back down to business. Let’s pick some cards for the week!

This card is from the Sacred Traveler Oracle deck by Denise Linn. In a time when many of us are faced with being stuck indoors or unable to travel, this is a great deck to help us think about new places as we work on our inner selves.

Choose the card from the picture below that calls to you the most (1, 2, or 3). If you have a question in mind, ask it. Let your heart and mind guide you.

#1 – Protected by Angels: You need to know that there are always angelic forces guiding your path. Even when it doesn’t feel like it, you’re heading in the right direction and constantly being guided. You simply need to be open, and you’ll feel their presence. You may even find physical evidence of this guidance in the form of a feather.

A secondary meaning for this card is that you are the healing, angelic force in someone else’s life.

#2 – Begin Now: It’s time to start that journey that’s been on your mind! This isn’t necessarily a physical journey, though it could be. Let go of anything that’s holding you back, and understand that you often have to let go of the old to bring in the new. You’ll never know what’s waiting out there for you unless you go find out for yourself!

#3 – Miracles: Something exciting and majestic is just waiting to happen in your life! Keep in mind that a miracle can take any number of forms. The more you pay attention to even the tiniest phenomena, the more you’ll see around you. Life itself is a miracle and a reason for celebration, so revel in the glory of it and know that bigger and better things are coming your way!

What card did you choose? What did it mean for you and the week ahead? I’d love to know!

Why Tarot?

If you’ve been following my blog, you know I’ve been posting quite a bit lately about tarot and oracle cards. This might seem like a strange thing to find on a fantasy author’s blog, but I’ve never thought of this page as a place that has to be dominated by marketing myself. Sure, I want to sell books (and you can buy them here!) but much of what I write about here is all about my pursuit of the Other.

For me, that Other is anything that brings a little magic into our everyday lives. Most of my books have that theme, whether it’s a woman who winds up fostering a young dragon or someone who communicates with a ghost to solve a crime. I’ve always wanted some of that magic in my own life, and sometimes I find it in studying the mystical.

I bought a tarot deck in my late teens, but life took over and I never really got a chance to learn how to use them. After taking an online course about oracles and divination through Harvard, I dug that original deck back out again. I noticed, though, that I didn’t really have a connection to this deck. Maybe it’s the artwork, but it just doesn’t click with me the way more recent decks do.

And it’s so magical to feel that connection! When I first opened my Spirit Animal oracle deck from Colette Baron-Reid, I could feel the energy in my palms and the bottoms of my feet. It lifted my heart and gave me a dizzy, exhilarated feeling. If having this kind of connection with a deck of cards sounds crazy, then I suggest you give it a shot. It’s amazing!

Tarot and oracle cards aren’t going to give me winning lottery numbers or guide me such a concrete and definitive way. I do, however, feel that they’re very effective at reminding me of the path I need to be on. I may draw a card that reminds me not to worry so much or that things are going to be all right. It maybe just be a random pretty card, and you could say I don’t need to rely on a device like this, but those messages are comforting, enjoyable, and make me feel like I’m getting a glimpse of the mystical world that’s so often hidden from us.

Have you had any experiences with tarot or oracle cards? Good, bad, or otherwise? I’d love to know!

Tarot Tuesday!

I confess I missed Tarot Tuesday last week! I certainly didn’t mean to, but time has really been getting away from me lately. This week, time to forge ahead!

This card is from the Sacred Traveler oracle deck by Denise Linn. It’s really quite a stunning deck, and the matte finish on the cards feels wonderful in the hand.

Answering the Call: This card is the sign you’ve been looking for! It’s the call you must answer, because this is the time. There’s no more waiting around, feeling uncertain. Whether it’s that big decision or that exciting-but-scary thing you want to do, it’s time to do it.

I was lucky enough that this card was actually one I pulled for a friend seeking advice about her job. I often feel that the cards tell us what we already know, and I think this is the case here.

The artwork on the cards is important to me, and I think there’s an interesting message on Answering the Call. The lines in the trees and the deer’s antlers reflect similar lines on the ivy and tree behind the woman. It’s as though the entire universe conspires to help us make these choices, and even though our destiny is right there in front of us, sometimes we need it to be as obvious as a big wooden door to see it!

What does Answering the Call mean to you? Do you have any big decisions you’re making this week?

Tarot Tuesday!

Let’s see what the week has in store for us! This single-card spread is from Diana Cooper’s Dragon Oracle Cards set, which is just so gorgeous and inspiring. And of course I love dragons!

This card is all about pure, warm-hearted love and the ability to take it all in. It isn’t always easy to let ourselves be loved or to see love in the world around us. You have to prepare your heart for it. You’ll be surprised at how your own expansion of love can affect those around you.

Personally, I think we all need to open ourselves up to some love right now. I see so much adversity on social media and on the news. Everyone is at each other’s throats, staunch in their opinions. I see far too many people who aren’t willing to open their eyes to the good in the world. I hope this changes soon.

I’ve paired this cards with some pieces of rose quartz, which also signify unconditional love.

What does the Rose Pink Dragon mean to you?
