Guest Post: Blending and Balancing Work and Home by Barbori Garnet

This guest post is by Barbori Garnet, author of Home at the Office: Working Remotely as a Way of Life.

The boundaries between work and home can become blurred, or perhaps even seem nonexistent, when working from home. To help with the balance between work and home, below are some ideas to make that happen.

Try journaling – Start your day or wind down your evening with journaling. It can be an excellent way to focus your thoughts before beginning work or getting your thoughts down to help you relax before bed. Choose a notebook that you like and a comfortable place to settle in, with a cup of tea in hand, for a special time of journaling.

Go outside – It can be as short as 10 or 15 minutes or as long as an hour – or longer – just as along as you get outside for a walk, jog, bike ride, ice skate, or cross-country ski. Getting fresh air and moving your body will help you reset during your work day – such as during your lunch break – or in the morning or afternoon, if you have some flexibility in your work hours or schedule.

Take breaks at home – Even at home, you can implement a few changes that will help establish a clear boundary between work and home. Some things to try include:

  • having a picnic lunch on your porch or in your yard
  • taking quick 5-minute exercise breaks throughout your work day to weightlift, do squats, lunges, or jumping jacks
  • depending on the season and climate you are in, spending 15 minutes in your garden planting, watering, or weeding can help to take a step back and come back refreshed

I hope that, by giving the above suggestions a try and including the ideas throughout your day, you will find more balance between work and home, making both more enjoyable.

Christmas Movie Time! Starting the Season with Love Hard on Netflix

Christmas movies are one of my favorite things about the season, but it’s always hard to decide where to start. An old classic, or something new? And with as many terrible Christmas movies as there are out there, it’s always a risk to grab a new title.

Love Hard poster.jpg

But I went ahead and chose Love Hard on Netflix. A story about dating apps and catfishing doesn’t sound very holiday-ish. Neither does the MA rating! I’m not always keen on modern movies in this genre, but Love Hard didn’t disappoint! A fun story, truly great characters, character arcs that occur in side characters as well as the two mains, and references to other great Christmas movies made this an absolute hit for me. Throw in some laughing, crying, and laughing-and-crying, and I’m pretty sure I’ll be adding this onto the list of movies I watch every year.

What Christmas movies are you watching? I’d love to know!

Tarot Tuesday: New Deck! The Wisdom of Avalon by Colette Baron-Reid

Every now and then, it’s time for a new deck! I’ve always been obsessed with Arthurian legend, so picking The Wisdom of Avalon by Colette Baron-Reid was a no-brainer for me. While soon enough you’ll see me doing my typical Tarot Tuesday in which you’ll get to choose a card from this deck, I wanted to give you a quick overview and share it with you!

I feel it’s important to connect with a deck, and it’s so easy for me to feel the magic in this one! Just look at these wonderful images! I’m thrilled to see both Merlin and the Lady of the Lake, and the deck is mixed in with more day-to-day ideas like the one on the left.

Even the backs of the cards are gorgeous. I feel they inspire the mythical and the spiritual with their beautiful design.

I look forward to getting to know this deck better, and you’ll be seeing it added to my rotation soon enough! There will be another new deck next week, so be sure to check back!

World Building: Bakery Names

Every fictional town needs a bakery! Where else can your characters stop for a Danish when they’re feeling sad pick up a box of doughnuts for the office? It might also be a great place for a breakup, an important clue, or even just a storefront that your character walks past on their way to something more important.

Of course, you’ve got to name that bakery! Here are a few that I’ve come up with in my writing exercises as I’m world building. I can’t guarantee that they haven’t been used anywhere before, but perhaps they’ll be enough to inspire you.

  • For Cake’s Sake
  • The Sugar Shack
  • Sprinkled with Fun
  • The Frosting Factory
  • Buttercream Dreams
  • Flour Power
  • The Cookie Cutter
  • Babycakes
  • Upper Crust
  • Buns in the Oven (could be particularly cute if the owner has a lot of kids!)
  • Rise to the Occasion
  • The Cakewalk
  • Cookie Crumbles
  • Sugar Shop
  • Loafing Around
  • Sweet Dreams
  • Icing on the Cake
  • You Take the Cake
  • Patty’s Cakes
  • A Slice of the Pie
  • Breaking Bread

What would you add to this list? I’d love to know! I’m sure I’ll be adding more myself, so be sure to check back. Don’t forget to take a peek at my Writers’ Resources page for more inspiration!
